India has 17 public holidays in 2028. 16 of them fall on a weekend. The longest continuous break is 5 days. A further 33 days are granted at administrative discretion.
Who decides these days
India has no single nationwide holiday list. Each central-government office publishes its own, under a yearly Department of Personnel and Training memorandum, with the local employees' welfare committee recommending the contents. There are two tiers, Compulsory Gazetted and Restricted. The compulsory lists differ by place: for 2026 Delhi carries Ram Navami and Janmashtami where Bhubaneswar carries Ratha Yatra and Maha Navami.
