India runs a second tier underneath it: twenty-nine restricted holidays for 2026 that each employee chooses from, and the density of person-named days in that list is far higher — Guru Ravi Das's birthday, Swami Dayananda Saraswati's birthday, Shivaji Jayanti, Rabindranath Tagore's birthday, Maharishi Valmiki's birthday, Guru Teg Bahadur's martyrdom day. India does not pick one national figure and stop; it offers a menu of them, with Gandhi promoted to the tier nobody can decline.

🇹🇼How does Taiwan mark Founders and National Leaders? · 國父誕辰紀念日

Article 3 of Taiwan's Commemorative Days and Holidays Act, promulgated on 28 May 2025, sets 12 November as the birthday of the founding father — Sun Yat-sen. Article 4 then narrows the list of commemorative days that come with a day off to six: the founding of the Republic, Peace Memorial Day, Confucius's birthday, National Day, the recovery of Taiwan together with the Guningtou victory, and Constitution Day. Sun Yat-sen's birthday is not among them, so it is a day the statute names and nobody gets off. The same date carries a second identity in Article 5, which lists 12 November as Chinese Culture Renaissance Festival — also without a day off. The only person-named commemorative day in Taiwan that actually closes offices is Confucius's birthday on 28 September: a philosopher who died two and a half millennia ago, not the man who founded the state.

🇺🇸How does United States mark Founders and National Leaders? · Presidents' Day / Washington's Birthday

Section 6103(a) of title 5 of the U.S. Code lists eleven legal public holidays by name, and the third Monday in February appears as Washington's Birthday. Congress has never renamed it. What Congress did do, in Pub. L. 90–363 of 1968 (the Uniform Monday Holiday Act), was move it off the fixed date of 22 February onto a Monday — with the side effect that the holiday now always falls between 15 and 21 February and can never land on Washington's actual birthday. OPM attaches a footnote to every year's table: other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, but its policy is always to refer to holidays by the names designated in the law. States really do differ. Virginia Code § 2.2-3300 calls it "George Washington Day to honor George Washington (1732–1799), the first President of the United States" — one man. Washington State's RCW 1.16.050(1)(d) calls it "Presidents' Day," celebrated "as the anniversary of the births of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington" — two men. Two other individuals are named in the same federal section: the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., added by Pub. L. 98–144 in 1983, and Columbus Day, whose federal wording is untouched even where states have renamed their own version of the day.

Article 3 of the same act sets 12 March as the anniversary of the founding father's death. One man therefore occupies two entries in a single statute — a birth date and a death date — and neither is a day off. Article 5 gives 12 March a second identity as Arbor Day, chosen because Sun Yat-sen campaigned for reforestation, so the law names the same date twice for two different reasons. Seventeen days later, 29 March is Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Day under Article 3, and Article 7 requires a spring memorial rite for the war dead on it; Article 5 also makes that date Youth Day. Taiwan's pattern is not that it declines to commemorate individuals — it is that the individuals get the commemorations and other days get the holidays.

🇮🇩How does Indonesia mark Founders and National Leaders? · Hari Kartini

21 April is Hari Kartini, for Raden Ajeng Kartini. According to the Cabinet Secretariat, President Sukarno signed Presidential Decision No. 108 of 1964 on 2 May 1964, doing two things at once: recognising Kartini as a National Hero of Independence and fixing her birthday, 21 April, as a national day of commemoration. A national day of commemoration is not a day off. The joint decision of three ministers — signed on 19 September 2025 by the ministers of religious affairs, manpower and administrative reform — lists seventeen national holidays for 2026, and 21 April is not one of them. Schools open as usual; what changes is that students wear kebaya and the day fills with recitations and contests.

🇧🇷How does Brazil mark Founders and National Leaders?Tiradentes

21 April commemorates Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes ("tooth-puller", after his trade), hanged and quartered in Rio de Janeiro on that date in 1792 for his part in the Inconfidência Mineira against the Portuguese crown. The striking part is that the statute in force does not contain his name: Article 1 of Law 662 of 1949, as amended by Law 10.607 of 2002, lists the national holidays as bare dates, and 21 April is simply one of them. The name lives elsewhere. The provisional republican government's Decree 155-B of 14 January 1890 declared 21 April "consecrated to the commemoration of the precursors of Brazilian independence, summed up in Tiradentes". Law 4.897 of 9 December 1965 then declared Joaquim José da Silva Xavier civic patron of the Brazilian Nation and described 21 April as the date commemorating his execution. Administratively the name reappears in the foreign ministry's published calendar, where 21 April 2026 is listed as "Tiradentes (national holiday)".

🇯🇵How does Japan mark Founders and National Leaders?昭和の日

None of Japan's sixteen national holidays is named after an individual. For 29 April, the Act on National Holidays gives the purpose as looking back on the Shōwa era, which passed through turbulent days and achieved reconstruction, and thinking about the country's future — an era, not a person. The name has changed twice. When the act was passed in 1948, 29 April was the Emperor's Birthday, because the reigning emperor was Hirohito. A 1989 amendment renamed it Greenery Day, with a rationale about Japan being a country of abundant nature — a name that deliberately says nothing about anyone. A 2005 amendment made it Shōwa Day from 2007 and moved Greenery Day to 4 May. The Cabinet Office explanation is that 29 April was long familiar to the public as the Emperor's Birthday during the Shōwa era and symbolises that era. The current Emperor's Birthday, 23 February, names the office rather than a person: when the occupant changes, so does the date — most recently by the special abdication act, Act No. 63 of 2017.

🇮🇩How does Indonesia mark Founders and National Leaders? · Hari Lahir Pancasila

1 June, Hari Lahir Pancasila, is the Indonesian holiday that really does close everything — and it is named after a doctrine rather than the man who proposed it. President Joko Widodo signed Presidential Decision No. 24 of 2016 at Gedung Merdeka in Bandung on 1 June 2016; its first and second operative clauses set 1 June 1945 as the birth date of Pancasila and make 1 June a national holiday. What happened on that date was Sukarno's speech to the investigating committee for independence, where he set out five principles and gave them the name Pancasila. The holiday kept the name of the principles and not the name of the speaker. On the 2026 national holiday list it is entry number twelve.

🇨🇳Does China have Founders and National Leaders?

Mainland China has no statutory holiday or commemorative day named after an individual. In the State Council's Regulation on Public Holidays for National Annual Festivals and Memorial Days (State Council Order No. 795, revised 10 November 2024, in force 1 January 2025), Article 2 lists the seven holidays on which the whole population is off — New Year's Day, Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn and National Day — and not one carries a person's name. Article 3 lists four partial holidays (Women's Day, Youth Day, Children's Day, Army Day), named for a group or an institution. Article 5 even enumerates the commemorative days that come with no time off — the February 7th, May 30th, July 7th, September 3rd and September 18th anniversaries, plus Teachers' Day, Nurses' Day, Journalists' Day and Arbor Day — and every one of them points at an event or an occupation. Commemorations for Sun Yat-sen's and Mao Zedong's birthdays do take place, but they sit outside this regulation, so institutionally they are not commemorative days and they do not touch the working calendar.
