Mainland China's National Day is 1 October, marking the founding of the People's Republic on that date in 1949. Round anniversaries such as the tenth or seventieth bring a military parade; other years are marked mainly by local events.

🇹🇼How does Taiwan mark National Days?國慶日／雙十國慶

Taiwan's National Day is 10 October, because an uprising broke out in Wuchang on that day in 1911, leading to the end of imperial rule and the founding of the Republic of China. It is one of the commemorative days given a one-day holiday under the Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays. There is a ceremony and flag raising in front of the Presidential Office and fireworks in the evening. It is also one of the few national days here that commemorates an uprising rather than a declaration or a founding — what is marked is the overthrow, not the establishment. The tenth of October commemorates the Wuchang uprising of 1911, and its formal name is the National Day of the Republic of China. The fixed acts of the day are the flag raising and the celebration assembly in front of the Presidential Office, completed in the morning, with the route and the street closures announced in advance each year. It is a day off, so watching the ceremony by day and the fireworks by night both fit inside it — one of the few days in Taiwan that puts ritual and leisure in the same slot.

🇯🇵How does Japan mark National Days?建國記念の日

Japan's National Foundation Day is 11 February, and it differs from the other six: what it marks is not a historical event with a recorded date but the legendary enthronement of Emperor Jimmu. It was only designated a national holiday by ordinance in 1966, and its stated purpose is to reflect on the founding of the nation and cultivate love of country — note 'reflect on', because there is no identifiable founding date. The date exists and the event does not; that is what makes it unusual here.

Brazil's Independence Day is 7 September, marking the declaration of independence on that date in 1822, and it is a national holiday under Law 662. What makes it distinctive is the process: Brazilian independence was declared by the Portuguese heir apparent, and what followed was an empire rather than a republic — so 7 September commemorates the break with the colonial metropolis, while the form of state established then is not the one in place today.
