In Brazil, Eid al-Adha is neither a national holiday nor, yet, a statutory commemorative date. In February 2024 a Senate committee approved a proposal to add Jewish and Islamic festivals to the national list of commemorative dates. According to the 2010 census, Muslims were about 0.02 per cent of the population, some 35,000 people, so the day runs on announcements and arrangements made by individual mosques and communities. Here the question about the festival is not how it is kept, but whether it has been written into the country's calendar at all.

🇨🇳How does China mark Eid al-Adha?古尔邦节（宁夏回族自治区）

Eid al-Adha — known locally as Gurbang — is not a national holiday in mainland China, but it is a local one in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, with two days off: 27 and 28 May in 2026. That is a day more than Eid al-Fitr received, because Eid al-Fitr fell on a Saturday that year. The number of days is published each year in the regional government's annual holiday notice, so the length of the break for the same festival inside China is re-decided at regional level every year. In China, Eid al-Adha is not a nationwide holiday but a local one: autonomous regions such as Xinjiang, where the believing population is concentrated, set the day off themselves, while the rest of the country works as usual. The same festival holding two calendar states inside one country shows why the question of whether the day is off depends on which level of rule is being asked.

🇹🇼How does Taiwan mark Eid al-Adha?宰牲節／古爾邦節

Taiwan's Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays lists religious days one by one — the Daoist day, the Buddha's birthday — yet neither Eid al-Fitr nor Eid al-Adha appears; the Islamic calendar is simply absent from that list. In practice Taiwan hosts hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from Indonesia, and whether leave can be had for the congregational prayer rests with the employer. The Ministry of Labor's approach is a press release urging employers to be flexible, not an amendment to the Act. So the day looks like this here: the mosques fill as usual, but the attendance was paid for out of personal leave.

🇯🇵Does Japan have Eid al-Adha?

Japan has no Eid al-Adha. The national holidays number sixteen, all written into the Act on National Holidays, and adding or removing one means amending that Act — Japan has neither Brazil's devolution of religious days to municipalities nor China's provision for autonomous regions to set their own. So in Japan whether to take the day off for Eid is purely a matter between a person and their employer, with no layer of public rule involved at all.
