Ash Wednesday, Quarta-feira de Cinzas, opens Lent on the forty-sixth day before Easter — 18 February in 2026. For Brazilian federal bodies it is an optional working day, and only until two in the afternoon: the same ministerial decree spells it out, with Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 February free all day for Carnival and Wednesday 18 free from 2 p.m. Which means the best-known carnival in the world, together with the day that closes it, occupies three consecutive days on the federal calendar without a single statutory holiday among them — the whole arrangement rests on an administrative act reissued every year. Liturgically the ash marked on foreheads that day is made by burning the previous year's Palm Sunday palms, and the forty days of fasting and self-denial that begin with it are exactly why Carnival has to end at midnight the night before. Municipalities handle it differently: some count the whole Wednesday in their own holiday schedules, others simply follow the federal half-day.

Indonesia lists Good Friday — Wafat Yesus Kristus — as a statutory national holiday; in 2026 it fell on Friday 3 April. The arithmetic is counter-intuitive: this is the country with the largest Muslim population on earth, Christians make up around a tenth of it, and the day is nonetheless written into the national holiday table. Procedurally it is announced each year by a joint decree of the ministers of religion, manpower and administrative reform — the 2026 decree carries the numbers 1497/2025, 2/2025 and 5/2025, was signed on 19 September 2025, and sets out seventeen national holidays and eight collective leave days. The legal lineage runs back to Presidential Decree No. 10 of 1971, issued specifically to declare "Hari Wafat Isa Al-Masih" a holiday; Presidential Decree No. 8 of 2024 revoked four older decrees at once and consolidated them, and in the same act changed the holiday's name from Isa Al-Masih, the Islamic form, to Yesus Kristus. The renaming was not decoration — it settled whose day the official calendar says this is.

Section 6103 of Title 5 of the United States Code lists eleven legal public holidays: New Year's Day, the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Exactly one of them is a Christian observance, Christmas. Good Friday is not there, nor the Ascension, nor Corpus Christi. The difference appears one level down. Louisiana Revised Statutes 1:55 lists Good Friday and All Saints' Day on 1 November among its days of public rest and legal holidays, alongside Mardi Gras; Delaware makes Good Friday a legal holiday outright, at 1 Del. C. §501(a)(3). On the same Friday, federal employees are at work while state offices in Delaware and Louisiana are shut. As for Corpus Christi, it does not appear even in those two, the longest lists of Christian observances any American state keeps.

Corpus Christi falls on the Thursday sixty days after Easter — 4 June in 2026. Its legal standing in Brazil is lower than its prominence suggests: at federal level it is not a statutory holiday but a *ponto facultativo*, an optional working day. Portaria MGI No. 11,460 of 29 December 2025 lists both 4 June and the bridging day of 5 June as ponto facultativo, while the same table marks 3 April (the Passion) and 25 December (Christmas) as *feriado nacional*. What turns the day into an actual holiday is municipal legislation. Rondonópolis in Mato Grosso authorised it as a municipal holiday as far back as Municipal Law No. 858 of 1982, whose Article 2 defines the date as "the Thursday following Trinity Sunday"; Socorro in São Paulo state uses Municipal Law No. 4,640 of 2023; Vitória da Conquista in Bahia uses Municipal Law No. 2,669 of 2022, which amended Article 55 of its 1993 holiday law. So whether anyone gets the day off depends on which municipality you live in. In Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, residents begin laying sawdust carpets over the stone streets at eight the previous evening, and the procession walks across them after the seven o'clock mass at the Pilar basilica the next morning, with the two parishes of the town taking turns to organise it year by year.

China's Measures on Public Holidays for National Annual Festivals and Memorial Days (State Council Decree No. 795, fourth revision of 10 November 2024, in force from 1 January 2025) sets out in Article 2 the seven festivals on which all citizens have leave: New Year's Day, Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. Article 3 covers days off for particular groups — Women's Day, Youth Day, Children's Day and Army Day — and Article 4 hands the festivals customary to ethnic minorities to the local people's governments. Nowhere in the Measures is there a Christian observance, let alone one of the movable days counted from Easter.

India's central government holiday list has two tiers. In the 2026 list, only two of the compulsory gazetted holidays are Christian: Good Friday on 3 April and Christmas Day on 25 December. The far broader restricted tier adds Easter Sunday on 5 April and Christmas Eve on 24 December. Ash Wednesday, Ascension, Pentecost and Corpus Christi appear in neither — not even in the restricted tier, which runs to some thirty entries an employee may choose from. That list simultaneously carries Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist days, so the omission is not a matter of the list being short: these particular days simply did not go in.

Japan's Act on National Holidays (Act No. 178 of 1948) lists sixteen holidays, all named after seasons, the imperial house or civic life — New Year's Day, Coming-of-Age Day, National Foundation Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Children's Day, Marine Day, Mountain Day, Respect for the Aged Day, the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, Culture Day, Labour Thanksgiving Day, the Emperor's Birthday and so on. Not one of them is religious. The words for Christ, resurrection and Christmas do not appear anywhere in the text of the law. Japanese churches keep Ash Wednesday and Good Friday services, and commercial Christmas is loud, but none of these days is a holiday in law, and the movable days after Easter are barely known outside the churches.

🇹🇼Does Taiwan have The Christian calendar’s other days?

None of the days the Easter computus generates exists in Taiwan's holiday system. The Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays lists nineteen commemorative days plus a schedule of festivals, and contains no Ash Wednesday, no Good Friday, no Ascension, no Pentecost and no Corpus Christi. The only date that coincides with a Christian one is 25 December, Constitution Day, which does carry a day off — but because the Constitution of the Republic of China took effect on that date in 1947. The overlap with Christmas is a coincidence of the calendar with no legal connection at all. Churches in Taiwan of course keep these days, with ashes, the Stations of the Cross and Holy Week services, but that is each church's own calendar and it does not move a working day.
