How does India mark Eid al-Adha?

Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid)

Local date
May 17, 2027
When is it?
The tenth day of the month of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic calendar; listed on the national holiday calendar

India lists Id-ul-Zuha, locally often called Bakrid, among its national holidays; the date published for 2026 is 27 May (Wednesday). Congregational prayer at the mosque, the sacrifice, and dividing the meat into three parts — household, relatives and friends, the poor — form the shared frame. But in India this is a national holiday in a country where Muslims are a minority, so the same day carries very different weight between communities, and practice differs by state.

What is this topic?

One date in the Islamic calendar, four different institutional treatments: Indonesia makes it a national holiday and adds joint leave; India lists it among national holidays; the United States has no federal holiday but New York City public schools close; and in Brazil it is not even a statutory commemorative date yet — a Senate committee only approved adding Islamic festivals to the national calendar in 2024. What this page compares is the level of recognition, not the details of the rite.
