How does United States mark Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr

Local date
March 9, 2027
When is it?
The 1st of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar; listed as a school closure day on the New York City public school calendar.

Eid al-Fitr is not a federal holiday in the United States, but the official New York City public school calendar lists it as a day schools are closed (Tuesday, 9 March in the 2026–27 school year). The same calendar also closes schools for Eid al-Adha. The recognition sits at the school-district level rather than the national one, and it reaches classrooms rather than workplaces. Because the date turns on the moon, a district calendar often prints a provisional day and adjusts it after the sighting — a rare exception for a calendar that must be printed the previous spring so families can plan leave. New York City public schools added Eid to the official holiday list from the 2015 school year, which forced that adjustment to be handled institutionally rather than left to individual families requesting absence.

What is this topic?

Taiwan does not make Eid al-Fitr a statutory holiday; in Indonesia, the first day of Ramadan is announced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs at the preceding night's sidang isbat, while the Eid break is scheduled separately around 1 Shawwal. This page separates “when Indonesia starts fasting” from “when Eid leave begins” and compares the institutional treatment in India, Taiwan, the United States, and mainland China.
