Eid al-Fitr is not a federal holiday in the United States, but the official New York City public school calendar lists it as a day schools are closed (Tuesday, 9 March in the 2026–27 school year). The same calendar also closes schools for Eid al-Adha. The recognition sits at the school-district level rather than the national one, and it reaches classrooms rather than workplaces. Because the date turns on the moon, a district calendar often prints a provisional day and adjusts it after the sighting — a rare exception for a calendar that must be printed the previous spring so families can plan leave. New York City public schools added Eid to the official holiday list from the 2015 school year, which forced that adjustment to be handled institutionally rather than left to individual families requesting absence.
