Indonesia treats Eid al-Fitr as a national holiday and adds joint leave (cuti bersama) around it, producing the largest homecoming movement of the year. The customs are travelling home, asking forgiveness of elders, sharing family meals, and exchanging food. The 'fresh start' here is first of all a reconciliation of relationships, not a calendar new year. The date follows the moon and a government announcement, so it moves each year. The length of the break is not a product of the religious calendar but an administrative decision: three ministries — religious affairs, manpower and administrative reform — issue a joint decree each year adding collective leave around Eid, stretching a two-day festival into close to a week. The homeward rush can therefore be scheduled in advance, with the transport authorities publishing services and flow forecasts ahead of time rather than waiting for the crowds.

Indonesia's first day of Ramadan is not looked up in a table — it is announced. The Ministry of Religious Affairs convenes a sidang isbat, an evidentiary session, on the preceding evening, weighing crescent observations from scores of stations across the country against the astronomical calculation, and only then declares whether the next day is the first of Ramadan. For 1447 AH (2026) that session met on 17 February; the crescent stood below the horizon at every station, and the session settled on 19 February as the first day by calculation. Which means the confirmed answer to "what date does Indonesia start fasting" is, by design, unavailable months ahead — what is available is the calculated estimate, and the confirmation comes the night before. That is the opposite of the Eid break, which three ministries schedule by joint decree a year in advance.
