How does India mark National Days?
Independence Day
- Local date
- August 15, 2027
India has two national-level days: Independence Day on 15 August marks the end of British rule in 1947, and Republic Day on 26 January marks the constitution coming into force in 1950. The first has the prime minister raising the flag at the Red Fort and giving an address; the second centres on the large parade in New Delhi with state tableaux. Independence and constitution-making are commemorated on separate days — the founding is not one moment here but two.
What is this topic?
The seven national days commemorate different kinds of events: the United States, Brazil, Indonesia and India mark the moment of leaving colonial rule or declaring independence; mainland China marks the founding of a state; Taiwan marks an uprising that ended an empire; and Japan's National Foundation Day has no corresponding dated historical event at all, being set on a legendary enthronement. What this page compares is where each place places the day a country is counted from.
