Independence Day in the United States is 4 July, marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in 1776. What it commemorates is the day a document was adopted, not the end of a war or the formation of a government — the war of independence ran on for another seven years. It is a federal holiday, with fireworks, parades and barbecues, and fireworks were written into the imagination of the day from its very first year.
