How does Indonesia mark National Days?
Hari Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia

Indonesia's Independence Day is 17 August, marking the Proclamation of 1945. It is among the most important public days of the year: schools and government offices hold flag ceremonies, while neighbourhoods run the lomba 17-an — greased-pole climbing, cracker-eating races and other street contests that turn a national commemoration into a whole-street event. That scale of 'commemoration equals neighbourhood games day' is unique among these seven places.
What is this topic?
The seven national days commemorate different kinds of events: the United States, Brazil, Indonesia and India mark the moment of leaving colonial rule or declaring independence; mainland China marks the founding of a state; Taiwan marks an uprising that ended an empire; and Japan's National Foundation Day has no corresponding dated historical event at all, being set on a legendary enthronement. What this page compares is where each place places the day a country is counted from.
