China's Measures on Public Holidays for National Annual Festivals and Memorial Days (State Council Decree No. 795, fourth revision of 10 November 2024, in force from 1 January 2025) sets out in Article 2 the seven festivals on which all citizens have leave: New Year's Day, Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. Article 3 covers days off for particular groups — Women's Day, Youth Day, Children's Day and Army Day — and Article 4 hands the festivals customary to ethnic minorities to the local people's governments. Nowhere in the Measures is there a Christian observance, let alone one of the movable days counted from Easter.

Beyond Christmas and Easter, the same Easter computus produces a whole series of days: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Ascension, Pentecost, Corpus Christi. How far a national calendar follows that series varies enormously. Indonesia, with the largest Muslim population in the world, makes both Good Friday and Ascension statutory national holidays and adds a collective leave day after Ascension. Brazil, the largest Catholic country, treats Corpus Christi at federal level as an optional working day, not a statutory holiday — it becomes a real holiday only where a city council has legislated one. The United States federal list of eleven holidays contains exactly one Christian day, Christmas. Pentecost appears nowhere: it always falls on a Sunday.
