Mainland China's Teachers' Day is 10 September, and its origin is precise: on 11 January 1985 the State Council put a proposal to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and on 21 January the ninth session of the Sixth Standing Committee resolved to make 10 September Teachers' Day each year; 10 September that same year was the first one. It is not a day off, and its form is mainly commendations and school events honouring teachers. The tenth of September was fixed only in 1985, placed in the opening days of the school year so that the first act of the new term would be a salute to teachers. It is a commemorative day rather than a holiday, and classes run as usual — so Teachers' Day in China takes the form of commendations and assemblies inside the school rather than a day off. Unlike India's, which is tied to one person's birthday, this one is tied to the rhythm of the term.
