How does Brazil mark Long Holiday Weeks?

Brazil's long weekends rest on a ministerial order reissued every year. Portaria MGI No. 11,460 of 29 December 2025 sets out ten national holidays and nine days of ponto facultativo for 2026. It binds only the direct federal administration, its agencies and foundations, does not touch services deemed essential, and has no hold at all over private employers. The two entries that explain the system are the ones with no name: Monday 20 April is a ponto facultativo attached to Tiradentes Day on Tuesday 21 April, and Corpus Christi on Thursday 4 June — itself only a ponto facultativo, not a national holiday — is followed by Friday 5 June, also nameless. Brazilians call this hanging the holiday, enforcar o feriado, and the government has written the practice into the official gazette. Carnival Monday and Tuesday are handled the same way, with Ash Wednesday running until two in the afternoon. The same notice adds that a complementary order may change the calendar at any time, without prior warning.
