Silver Week is Golden Week's opposite: it does not happen every year. Respect-for-the-Aged Day is "the third Monday of September" and so moves between the 15th and the 21st. Autumnal Equinox Day takes the astronomical equinox day and moves between the 22nd and the 24th. Article 3(3) of the holiday act makes any non-holiday day with holidays on both sides a holiday — which happens only when the Monday lands on the 21st and the equinox on the 23rd, leaving the 22nd in between. The Cabinet Office's own explanatory page describes it as a holiday that appears irregularly, once every several years. 2026 is one of those years: 21 September Respect-for-the-Aged Day, 22 September holiday, 23 September Autumnal Equinox Day, joined to the weekend before for five days. In 2027 the Monday is the 20th and the equinox the 23rd, two days apart, and nothing happens. And the equinox itself only becomes official when the National Astronomical Observatory's almanac is published in the official gazette on 1 February of the preceding year; on the observatory's own published calculations, the next year that works is 2037.

🇨🇳How does China mark Long Holiday Weeks?黄金周

China's long holidays are arithmetic. The Measures on National Annual Festivals and Commemorative Days (State Council Decree No. 795, in force 1 January 2025) grant only three days for National Day, 1 to 3 October, and four for Spring Festival — Lunar New Year's Eve and the first three days of the first lunar month. Article 7, added in the 2024 amendment, is the sentence that matters: holidays for all citizens may be arranged with unified rest and shift-swapping so that a longer break is actually formed, and, save in particular cases, continuous work before or after a statutory holiday shall not generally exceed six days. What turns three days into seven is not the law but a notice the State Council General Office issues each November. The 2026 one is Guobanfamingdian [2025] No. 7: National Day off from Thursday 1 October to Wednesday 7 October, seven days, with Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October worked; Spring Festival from 15 to 23 February, nine days, with Saturdays 14 and 28 February worked; Labour Day 1 to 5 May, five days, with 9 May worked. The extra days are not given. They are moved forward and paid back.

India's public holidays are not issued by the centre. Each state declares them under the explanation to Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, read with a Ministry of Home Affairs notification of 8 June 1957 — which means a country's holiday system rests on a nineteenth-century law about cheques. West Bengal's Finance (Audit) Department notification No. 4188-F(P2) of 27 November 2025 divides 2026 into three lists. List I is public holidays under the Act, and it carries Durga Puja Maha Astami on 19 October, Maha Nabami on the 20th and Dasami on the 21st. List II is holidays by order of the state government: state offices shut, banks do not, and three of its entries — 22, 23 and 24 October — are titled simply "Additional Day for Durga Puja" and correspond to no rite. List III is sectional: Easter Saturday for Christians only, Hul Diwas on 30 June for Santhal Adivasis only. Stitched together, 15 to 26 October is twelve consecutive days, the longest run of any of these seven places — and it exists in one state.

🇹🇼How does Taiwan mark Long Holiday Weeks?春節連假

Two layers decide how long Taiwan's Lunar New Year run is. Article 6 of the Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays fixes it in words: "Lunar New Year's Eve and Spring Festival: five days, from the day before the last day of the twelfth lunar month to the third day of the first lunar month." Article 8 then says any holiday falling on a weekly rest day must be compensated, and that adjusting holidays and designating make-up workdays is for the competent authority to arrange and announce. In 2026 the eve falls on 16 February, so the statutory five days begin on Sunday 15 February; that Sunday earns one compensatory day, and the run becomes Saturday 14 February to Sunday 22 February — nine days, with not one make-up workday anywhere in it. The 2026 and 2027 office calendars carry exactly two categories of day: working day and holiday. In 2027 the eve falls on a Friday, two of the five statutory days land on the weekend, and after compensation the run is 4 to 10 February — seven days. Same statute, two days apart, and the whole difference is which weekday the eve happens to be.

🇮🇩How does Indonesia mark Long Holiday Weeks?Cuti Bersama

Indonesia splits the question across two documents. National holidays follow Presidential Decision No. 8 of 2024. Cuti bersama — joint leave — is set annually by a joint decision of the ministers of religion, manpower, and administrative and bureaucratic reform. The 2026 one is Numbers 1497, 2 and 5 of 2025, signed on 19 September 2025 at the coordinating ministry for human development and culture, fixing 17 national holidays and 8 joint leave days, 25 in total. The clause that defines the system is inside the decision itself: taking joint leave reduces the employee's annual leave entitlement. The days that join the run are paid for by the worker. In 2026 that produces 18 March joint leave, 19 March Nyepi, 20 March joint leave, 21 and 22 March Eid al-Fitr, 23 and 24 March joint leave — seven consecutive days. The start of Ramadan and the dates of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are not in the decision at all; they come from a separate decision of the minister of religion. The same document tells hospitals, power and water utilities, fire services, police, banks and transport operators to roster staff through it.

Nobody has to decide Japan's Golden Week each year. Article 2 of the Act on National Holidays (Act No. 178 of 1948) writes four dates straight into the statute — 29 April Showa Day, 3 May Constitution Memorial Day, 4 May Greenery Day, 5 May Children's Day — and those four are already crammed into a single week. Article 3(2) adds one more rule: when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the nearest following day that is not itself a holiday becomes a holiday. In 2026, 3 May is a Sunday, so the Cabinet Office holiday table carries an extra line — "Holiday, 6 May, a holiday under Article 3(2)" — and Saturday 2 May through Wednesday 6 May is five days straight. In 2027 nothing of the kind happens: 29 April is a Thursday, and 3 to 5 May run Monday to Wednesday. No make-up work, no ministry announcement. Four dates sit in the statute, and the calendar does the rest.

🇧🇷How does Brazil mark Long Holiday Weeks?Ponto facultativo

Brazil's long weekends rest on a ministerial order reissued every year. Portaria MGI No. 11,460 of 29 December 2025 sets out ten national holidays and nine days of ponto facultativo for 2026. It binds only the direct federal administration, its agencies and foundations, does not touch services deemed essential, and has no hold at all over private employers. The two entries that explain the system are the ones with no name: Monday 20 April is a ponto facultativo attached to Tiradentes Day on Tuesday 21 April, and Corpus Christi on Thursday 4 June — itself only a ponto facultativo, not a national holiday — is followed by Friday 5 June, also nameless. Brazilians call this hanging the holiday, enforcar o feriado, and the government has written the practice into the official gazette. Carnival Monday and Tuesday are handled the same way, with Ash Wednesday running until two in the afternoon. The same notice adds that a complementary order may change the calendar at any time, without prior warning.

🇺🇸How does United States mark Long Holiday Weeks? · Three-Day Weekend

No American official can declare a bridging day. There is exactly one source of a long weekend: 5 U.S.C. 6103 writes five of the eleven legal public holidays as "the Nth Monday" of a month — the third Monday in January, the third Monday in February, the last Monday in May, the first Monday in September, the second Monday in October. That was the work of Public Law 90-363 of 28 June 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which added Columbus Day and moved Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day and Veterans Day onto Mondays. Veterans Day was pushed back to 11 November by Public Law 94-97 in 1975 — the only one of the four ever reversed. Subsection (b) makes the Friday before a legal public holiday when the holiday falls on a Saturday, and Executive Order 11582 of 11 February 1971 pushes a Sunday holiday to the next workday. So Independence Day 2026 falls on Saturday 4 July and the Office of Personnel Management's calendar records it on Friday 3 July, while Memorial Day on Monday 25 May makes its usual three days. Nothing is worked back, and nothing is added.
