When is it?

Five days running from the day before Lunar New Year's Eve to the third day of the first lunar month, with compensatory days added for any that fall on a Saturday or Sunday; the exact dates are published each year by the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration in the government office calendar.

Two layers decide how long Taiwan's Lunar New Year run is. Article 6 of the Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays fixes it in words: "Lunar New Year's Eve and Spring Festival: five days, from the day before the last day of the twelfth lunar month to the third day of the first lunar month." Article 8 then says any holiday falling on a weekly rest day must be compensated, and that adjusting holidays and designating make-up workdays is for the competent authority to arrange and announce. In 2026 the eve falls on 16 February, so the statutory five days begin on Sunday 15 February; that Sunday earns one compensatory day, and the run becomes Saturday 14 February to Sunday 22 February — nine days, with not one make-up workday anywhere in it. The 2026 and 2027 office calendars carry exactly two categories of day: working day and holiday. In 2027 the eve falls on a Friday, two of the five statutory days land on the weekend, and after compensation the run is 4 to 10 February — seven days. Same statute, two days apart, and the whole difference is which weekday the eve happens to be.
