The United States does not hold Labor Day on 1 May but on the first Monday of September, as a federal holiday. Its placement is itself a historical choice: International Workers' Day on 1 May grew out of the American eight-hour-day movement, yet the official American observance ended up in September. In practice that Monday functions as the end of summer and the last long weekend before school, and labour issues are not its most visible content.
