India's national holiday list does not contain 1 May: among the seventeen compulsory days gazetted for 2026, that date is Budha Purnima. Whether 1 May is a day off is decided state by state, and the name on it need not be Labour Day — Maharashtra's own holiday notification (the state gazette, in Marathi) lists 1 May as Maharashtra Din, marking the state's formation in 1960 rather than labour; every other state keeps its own list. This is normal for the Indian holiday system: the national list is short, and what actually shapes daily life is usually the state list and the institution's own list.
