Indonesia's National Father's Day is 12 November, but it was not established by the state: on that date in 2006 a civil-society group, the Association of Sons of the Motherland, declared it in the square before the Solo city hall in Central Java, alongside the results of a letter-writing contest addressed to fathers, with a thousand letters sent by children from around the country. The date was chosen to balance Mother's Day, which had long been fixed by presidential decree on 22 December; the first observance was held simultaneously in Solo and in Maumere in the east, as a symbol of the two ends of Indonesia. Mother's Day set by the state and Father's Day set by citizens — that asymmetry is itself the data.

🇺🇸How does United States mark Father's Day? · Father's Day

Father's Day took a long time to settle in the United States. On 24 April 1972 House Joint Resolution 687 became Public Law 92-278, designating the third Sunday in June each year; President Nixon then issued Proclamation 4127 directing government buildings to fly the flag. Mother's Day had completed the same process back in 1914 — fifty-eight years earlier. The gap between the two dates in institutional time is itself readable data. Before the statute, the date had already been recognised by the executive: in 1966 President Johnson issued a proclamation naming the third Sunday in June, but a proclamation is issued year by year and carries no permanence, so a law was still needed to make the arrangement fixed. The 1972 public law wrote it down, and the date no longer had to be declared afresh each year.

🇯🇵How does Japan mark Father's Day?父の日

Japan's Chichi no Hi is the third Sunday in June, following the American date. It holds no institutional position at all: it is not a national holiday, and no law or ordinance designates it. Its trace in flower demand is also much fainter than Mother's Day's — the agriculture ministry's briefing on the flower sector names Mother's Day and the equinoctial weeks as the occasions where demand concentrates, and Father's Day is not among them. Same family relationship, very different measurable footprints.

🇨🇳How does China mark Father's Day?父亲节（无官方地位）

Father's Day has no official standing in China. The State Council's Measures on National Holidays and Commemorative Days sorts days off into two classes — those for all citizens (New Year, Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn, National Day) and those for some (Women's Day, Youth Day, Children's Day, Army Day) — and Father's Day appears in neither. Popular practice mostly follows the third Sunday in June, while some keep the eighth of August for the sound of the numbers; the two coexist and neither is prescribed. Every other place on this page has at least one document stating a date; what fills China's cell is the absence of that document.

🇮🇳How does India mark Father's Day?Father's Day

Father's Day has likewise not entered India's holiday system: the central and state holiday lists carry religious festivals and national commemorations, and this is not among them. What is followed in practice is the third Sunday in June, mostly in cities and schools, in the form of cards and cake. That is a different route from Taiwan's, where the date comes from a pun, or the United States', where it comes from a statute — here the date arrived from someone else's calendar.

Taiwan's Father's Day is 8 August, because 'eight-eight' sounds like the word for dad — the only one of these four whose date was chosen by phonetics. The Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays names it as a festival, and the same article states plainly that it is not a day off. So it is a fixed date, recognised in law, that leaves the calendar untouched: if 8 August falls on a weekday, the celebration happens after work. Because it is not a day off, the celebration itself usually slides to the nearest weekend: restaurant bookings peak on the Saturday and Sunday around the eighth of August rather than on the eighth itself. Taiwan's Father's Day therefore carries two dates at once — a legal one fixed on 8 August, and a lived one that drifts with the weekend each year.

🇧🇷How does Brazil mark Father's Day?Dia dos Pais

Brazil's Dia dos Pais is the second Sunday in August, and its origin is the most candid of the four: in 1953 the advertising man and journalist Sylvio Bhering proposed it, aiming to attract merchants to advertise in the newspaper O Globo. Mother's Day drove the first half of the year and Christmas the end of it; August was the gap. The date was later fixed to the second Sunday of August so it would always land on a weekend. A holiday openly designed as a retail window is unique among these four.
