In Japan, 23 November is the national holiday Kinro Kansha no Hi, whose stated purpose is to honour labour, celebrate production, and give thanks to one another. The date was previously Niiname-sai, the imperial rite in which the Emperor offers the new grain to the deities. When the postwar holiday law was drafted, the date was kept and the subject was swapped: an imperial harvest rite became a day on which the whole population thanks one another for their work. The harvest did not vanish from the holiday, but it was renamed 'production'. The date of 23 November is far older than the holiday's name: it was the harvest thanksgiving rite at which the emperor offered and tasted the year's new grain. The 1948 Act on National Holidays rewrote it as Labour Thanksgiving Day, its text speaking of honouring labour, celebrating production and citizens thanking one another — the object of gratitude moved from grain to work, while the date did not shift by a day. The same slot changed its contents, and that is an easy line to read past on a holiday table.

Its centre of gravity now is the family table and long-distance travel rather than farming itself, and the shopping that follows often draws more attention than the day. Pongal is the Tamil harvest festival of South India, four days long, timed by the Tamil calendar and the sun's entry into Capricorn, usually falling in mid-January. The festival is named after the dish: newly harvested rice boiled with milk and jaggery until it spills over the rim, and the overflowing is read as a sign of abundance. Each of the four days has its own object — the sun, the cattle that pull the plough, the household, the neighbours — so it is at once an agricultural festival, a thanks to working animals, and a round of family visits. Other regions of India mark the same window under different names.

Taiwan's Farmers' Day is not in autumn but at the beginning of spring — the Act on Commemorative Days and Holidays says plainly: "Farmers' Day: fixed on the day of Lichun." That is the reverse of the harvest days elsewhere: Thanksgiving, the farmers' harvest festival, Labour Thanksgiving all sit after the crop is in, while this one sits before the work starts. What it marks is not what has been gathered but the fact of going back to the field. The date is set by astronomy rather than by a fixed month and day, so whether it lands on 3, 4 or 5 February is something to look up each year in the Central Weather Administration's calendar tables. It is not a day off.

Brazil's June festivals are not a single day but a whole month organised around the Catholic feast days of Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter: bonfires, quadrilha dancing, sweet and savoury dishes made from corn, and squares strung with bunting. Forró, the music at its root, was registered by IPHAN as Brazilian intangible cultural heritage in 2021. Religious calendar, agricultural calendar, and urban economy all stack up on the same dates.

Mainland China's Farmers' Harvest Festival is new: approved by the Party Central Committee and confirmed by the State Council, from 2018 the autumn equinox in the lunar calendar became a festival for farmers themselves — the first national-level festival created specifically for them. The equinox was chosen because it is where the autumn harvest, autumn ploughing and autumn sowing meet. It is not a day off for all citizens but a policy-initiated occasion whose theme is set each year by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs — the opposite origin story to the four harvest festivals here that grew from below. This is a very new festival: created in 2018 and set on the autumn equinox, it is the first nationwide festival in China established specifically for farmers. The choice of date states the design intent by itself — it does not follow the lunar calendar or the week, but is pinned to the autumn equinox among the twenty-four solar terms, so that the whole country, north and south alike, lands inside its own harvest rhythm. How it is marked is left to each locality, so the content of the same day differs widely between provinces.

🇮🇩Does Indonesia have Harvest and Gratitude?

Indonesia has no nationwide day of harvest thanksgiving, but West Java has Seren Taun: the Sundanese farming community's rite of thanking the Creator for the year past and asking for a better one ahead, fixed on the twenty-second of Rayagung in the Sundanese Saka calendar and held over seven consecutive days at the Paseban Tri Panca Tunggal in Cigugur, Kuningan Regency. The sequence includes carrying the rice (Nyandak Pare), the thousand lamps (Damar Sewu) and pounding the grain together, closing with residents of different faiths praying side by side. It is registered as intangible cultural heritage of West Java. The national holiday table has no such day; this one rests on a calendar and a village.
