Topic: Moving Home and Housewarming
How does China mark Moving Home and Housewarming?
Everyday topic
In mainland China, moving is bound up with the household registration. The Household Registration Regulations require a citizen leaving the area of their current registration to file a moving-out registration and obtain a transfer document, then file a moving-in registration on arriving at the new place of residence. The reach of where your registration sits is wide: school admission, eligibility to buy a home or a car, and where social insurance is handled all follow it. So 'moving the hukou' and 'moving house' are frequently not the same event in mainland China — the person arrives first, and the registration may not follow. The household registration and residence permit formalities often outlast the move itself, and a child's school place along with many services hang on that line.
What is this topic?
Moving home has two separate questions: whether an address must be registered with one authority, and how a household marks the new threshold. Taiwan generally gives 30 days for a change of household registration, Japan 14 days for a move-in notification, mainland China ties the move to the hukou, and Indonesia updates the KTP and family card. India requires several separate updates such as Aadhaar, electoral records, and bank KYC, while the US and Brazil have no single address-registration system. This guide compares paperwork with housewarming, prayer, purification, gifts, and neighbours.
