How does India mark Mother's Day?
Mother's Day
- Local date
- May 9, 2027
- When is it?
- Observed by the public on the second Sunday of May; not included in the central or state holiday calendars
Mother's Day is likewise absent from India's central and state holiday lists; what is followed is the second Sunday in May, mostly in cities and schools. Running alongside it is an older line: the nine nights of Navratri honour the goddess in autumn, and in West Bengal Durga Puja stops whole cities for her. That is not "Mother's Day", but it is how this society puts motherhood on the public calendar. One is an imported date, the other a local season, and neither replaces the other.
What is this topic?
Four places keep Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May; Indonesia keeps it on 22 December — and there it is not a day for thanking mothers but a political commemoration of the first Indonesian Women's Congress of 1928. This page compares how the day was established in each place: a congressional resolution, a statute that names it and explicitly gives no day off, a peak in the cut-flower trade, or the starting point of a women's movement.
