Christmas is not a public holiday in Japan, and 26 December is an ordinary working day. It reads more like an occasion for couples and friends: a reserved cake, fried chicken, a walk past the illuminations. The Statistics Bureau's household survey shows that more than half of households buy cake in December, and that December cake spending peaks on the 24th — so the Japanese Christmas peak is Christmas Eve, not the 25th. Family gathering belongs to the new-year days instead, and gift exchange is not the centre.December as a whole is also the highest-spending month of the year for Japanese households: the Statistics Bureau's figures put monthly consumption expenditure that December at just over 318,000 yen, more than ten per cent above the annual monthly average, with the second-highest month, March, still some way behind. Year-end parties, Christmas, New Year's Eve and the preparations for the new year all crowd into the same month, which is what produces the peak.
