Japan moved its samba carnival off the calendar entirely. The Asakusa Samba Carnival is held on the last Saturday in August and has nothing to do with Lent. Taito Ward runs it; it began in 1981, the 2026 edition is the forty-first, the route goes from Umamichi-dori to Kaminarimon-dori, and recent years have drawn crowds of about half a million. It kept the form of carnival — troupes, costumes, percussion, a scored competition — and discarded its reason for existing on that date: in a country with no Lenten tradition, what is left of carnival is the parade itself. It is among the largest samba carnivals in the northern hemisphere.
